The agreement is a first step. No date has been set for construction or receipt of power, Helco said.
Site Constructors Inc. of California, owner of Hawi Renewable, has built more than 100 wind farms, Helco said.
The North Hawaii facility will have a capacity of 3 megawatts.
Helco already receives wind power from its 2.3-megawatt Lalamilo (Waimea area) facility and from Apollo Energy Corp.'s 7-megawatt facility at South Point.
Helco also has an agreement to buy from a 10-megawatt facility being developed by Kahua Power Partners in North Kohala.
