Humane Society plans to upgrade dog park
McInerny Dog Park is in for a face lift as the Hawaiian Humane Society, which operates it near its kennels at 2700 Waialae Ave., plans to refurbish it during the next few weeks.The dog park closes Monday for the work and is scheduled to reopen March 12.
"McInerny Dog Park celebrated its first birthday last October," said Pamela Burns, Humane Society president. "The park is so popular -- we're sorry to have to close temporarily. The results will be worth the wait."
Oahu's only other off-leash dog park is Bark Park at Diamond Head Road and 18th Avenue.
HFD to honor officers who were promoted
The Honolulu Fire Department will honor promoted chief officers at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Charles H. Thurston Training Center, 890 Valkenburgh St.Fire Battalion Chief Kenneth Word will be promoted to assistant chief. Capts. Paul Gerard, William Kaai Jr., Thomas Perkins, Edmund Suzuki and Clinton Wong will be promoted to battalion chiefs.
Damien High blood drive set for March 6
A blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 6 at Damien Memorial High School seeks donations from the community, alumni, family and friends.Blood drive organizers remind all that donors must be age 18 or older (17 with written parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

Fund-raiser to benefit Hawaii Hispanic center
A Latin Night fund-raiser at Rolando's Salsa Club and International Restaurant at Kahala Mall March 10 will raise money for the Hispanic Center of Hawaii, which provides community services to enhance the quality of life of Hispanics in Hawaii.The 6 p.m.-1 a.m. event will feature live entertainment and door prizes. Ex-Northern Mariana official gets 33 months
A former finance secretary of the Northern Mariana Islands was sentenced to 33 months in prison yesterday for stealing $56,000 from the government of the U.S. commonwealth.U.S. District Judge Alex Munson also ordered Antonio Cabrera, 41, to pay restitution, in addition to a $15,000 fine and a $300 special assessment fee. A jury convicted Cabrera in October of three counts of theft, while acquitting him on two counts of accepting bribes.

Investigators: Nanakuli fire set deliberately
Fire investigators have determined that an early morning fire that burned down a Nanakuli house yesterday was set deliberately.The 1:12 a.m. fire at 87-1634-E Farrington Highway originated in the back of the house, fire Capt. Richard Soo said.
He said the matter has been turned over to the Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division for investigation.
Meanwhile, they're mum on Waipahu blaze
Fire investigators are withholding results of their investigation on a fire that gutted a Waipahu house yesterday in which a man's decomposed body was found Wednesday.Fire Capt. Richard Soo said investigators will review the autopsy report. The medical examiner's office said today that the 46-year-old man suffered a heart attack.
Neighbors said they had not heard from the man for two weeks and that a bad odor had been coming from the house, at 94-1240 Kahuaina St.
Electrical fire destroys Ocean View house
OCEAN VIEW, Hawaii -- Fire caused by a short circuit destroyed a 3,600-square-foot house in Ocean View near the southern end of the Big Island yesterday, the Fire Department said.The loss was estimated at $302,000.
The Red Cross said it provided owners of the house, whose names were not revealed, with temporary housing, food vouchers, clothing, and other assistance.
Daiei employee arrested for taking cameras
Police arrested a 21-year-old Daiei employee early this morning after he was discovered on video surveillance removing four cameras from their boxes.While working, the employee took the cameras out of their boxes and left the store with them, police said.
The following day, the boxes were discovered and security reviewed the surveillance video. He was called to the store office and detained for police.
Ewa man arrested in sex assault on girlfriend
Police arrested a 32-year-old Ewa man yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting his girlfriend at his Ewa residence on Jan. 20.He was arrested at 1:17 p.m. on two counts of kidnapping, abuse, theft, first-degree sexual assault, terroristic threatening, auto theft and violation of parole.
Man arrested in knife threat of shipmate
A 32-year-old man was arrested at 6 p.m. yesterday after he threatened to kill his shipmate with a large kitchen knife, police said.The victim, 26, and the suspect have worked together for several months on a boat that was docked at Kewalo Basin.
After an argument, the suspect chased the victim off the boat, police said. Other crew members detained the suspect until police arrived.
