An 11-2 run at the end of the first half allowed UH to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room.
An 11-2 run at game's end protected a lead after Southern Methodist had cut its deficit to five points, 51-46.
The 62-48 WAC victory was the fifth without a loss on the road, and increased the Wahine's winning streak to seven games.
Hawaii (19-4, 10-2 WAC) is now one game behind league-leader Texas Christian (18-5, 10-1) in the loss column.
The Horned Frogs suffered their first WAC loss last night at Nevada, 71-63.
The Wahine will try to sweep their third consecutive road trip this season when they play Rice tomorrow (10 a.m. on KCCN radio 1420-AM) in Houston.
Crystal Lee and Jana Gabrielova had the hot hands at the end of the first half, scoring seven and six points, respectively.
With nine minutes left, Kylie Galloway went to the bench with her second foul. UH trailed, 19-14.
For the remainder of the half, the Wahine outscored SMU, 18-4.
Dainora Puida scored 11 of 17 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes to nullify SMU's rally.
"When they went to the full-court press with about four minutes left, we told the girls to attack, don't sit back," Hawaii coach Vince Goo said. "We put Kylie (who had four fouls) on the wing and she was able to get the ball to Dainora."
Several baskets came easily when the Wahine broke that press.
And the Wahine played to their strength -- defense.
UH held SMU to 26.4 percent shooting from the field and held leading scorer D-dra Rucker to 12 points.
"We took away the baseline and forced them to go over the top where our big people were to help out," Goo said.
Puida, who finished with 17 points, had 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Lee, who twisted her right ankle again just before the half, led the Wahine with 19 points.
The negatives, according to Goo, were that the Wahine did not box out well and committed too many turnovers.
But he did say many of the turnovers came when a player was trying to do something good with the attacking offense.
