Kalaheo celebrates after winning the OIA basketball title last night.

Kalaheo still dominating

After Kalaheo lost starting center Ikaika Alama-Francis to a bloody head wound, it still managed to fend off Mililani, 57-47, at the Blaisdell Arena to capture its seventh Oahu Interscholastic Association boys' basketball title in eight years.

The incident occurred with a little less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter, when Alama-Francis and Trojans center Trey Brown leaped after a rebound. The back of Alama-Francis' head slammed against the hardwood, opening the wound.

After trainers helped him off and wiped the blood off the court, the game resumed.

Without their tallest player, the rest of the Mustangs picked it up.

"We knew Mililani had a lot of weapons," said Kalaheo coach Pete Smith. "Losing Ikaika really hurt us. He's our inside presence, he's our best rebounder. We had to make some adjustments."

Kalaheo led the entire game until Mililani tied it at 35 on Trey Brown's layup with 3:58 to go in the third quarter.

But Kalaheo took a four-point lead as the fourth quarter began.

"We wanted to do two things -- shorten the game and force them to come out and play man," Smith said.

The ploy almost backfired when Mililani stole the ball and Rashaun Broadus scored on a fast break to trim the lead, 45-43. After a steal, Trojan Kaipo Patoc scored on a jumper and tied the score at 45.

But Kalaheo's Keoki Duarte responded from behind the arc with 5:14 to go. Kalaheo never looked back.

Ultimately, the Mustangs' stalling tactic worked.

"We don't usually do that, but that eventually got them in to a man-to-man where we were more effective," said Kalaheo guard Skyler Wilson, who led all scorers with 24 points. "And you know, we won the game."
