Coaches foresee RICE, to nobody's surprise, was picked to win the Western Athletic Conference baseball in the coaches preseason poll.

Owls are already 8-0 overall,

Star-BulletinThe Owls have won the WAC postseason tournament (when it was held) and the regular-season title each of the four seasons they have been a league member.
"No one really knows what anybody has except for Rice," said University of Hawaii acting head coach Carl Furutani.

Rice recovered from a slow start last year to share the regular-season title with San Jose State.
In 2001, the Owls have blasted out of the gate. They are 8-0 with wins over traditionally top teams Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Houston.
The Owls have been to five consecutive NCAA tournaments and have the overall balance to make it six this season.
Fresno State, an NCAA tournament participant last year after a two-year absence finished second in the poll.
Head coach Bob Bennett has a wealth of returnees and an experienced pitching staff.
Newcomer Nevada, a postseason player the past two years, and San Jose State, the WAC representative at the 2000 College World Series, tied for third place.
Wolf Pack coach Gary Powers has to replace five all-conference players and thinks he can do that with talented young players.
The Spartans reloaded by signing five junior college all-americans to go with five returning position players.
Hawaii was fifth, followed by Texas Christian and the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
The preseason poll does not bother Furutani.
"I'd rather be in that situation because I think we're better than that," Furutani said, "It comes down to pride. The poll told us to go out there and get things done."
A capsule look at the WAC teams in the order of the coaches' preseason poll follows.
RICE
Season record: 8-0.Last season: 43-23.
Coach: Wayne Graham.
Career record: 388-178 (10th season).
Plays UH: March 8-9-10 in Honolulu; April 19-20-21 in Houston.
Top players: Kenny Baugh, rhp; Jon Skaggs, rhp; Eric Arnold, ss; Jonathan Gonzalez, lhp; Jesse Roman, 1b.
Outlook: Baugh and Skaggs were a combined 24-4 in 2000. Jeff Nichols, 15-4 in 1999 before missing last year with an injury, has not pitched yet in 2001.
The Owls are hitting .308 as a team, led by A.J. Porfirio, a junior college transfer hitting .343. Roman is next at .321.
Graham could have one of the best pitching staffs in the country. The bullpen has done its job as Rice has won three games in the last at-bat.
FRESNO STATE
Season record: 5-4.Last season: 40-21.
Coach: Bob Bennett.
Career record: 1,229-707-4 (33rd season).
Plays UH: Feb. 24-25-26 in Fresno; April 7-8-9 in Honolulu.
Top players: Brandon Gemoll, 1b; Nick Garcia, 3b; Beau Hintz, lhp; Zach Minor, rhp; Nick Moran, rhp; Tony Guzman, of.
Outlook: Bennett thinks the strength of the Bulldogs is the pitching staff.
With Josh Labandeira's return to shortstop, FSU has a veteran infield. Brad Harper is behind the plate for the third season. Two veterans return in the outfield.
The Bulldogs will be tough, if they don't beat themselves as they did at times in 2000.
NEVADA
Season record: 2-7.Last season: 38-19.
Coach: Gary Powers.
Career record: 562-412-4 (19th season)
Plays UH: Today, tomorrow and Saturday in Honolulu; May 3-4-5 in Reno.
Top players: Matt Maguire, 2b; Joey Herrera, ss; Darrell Rasner, lhp; Josh Laidlaw, rf.
Outlook: The Wolf Pack lost a lot of senior leadership. New leaders will have to emerge this season. The candidates are Maguire and catcher Christian Popoff.
Whether Nevada challenges for the WAC title depends on the development of young players. Another key for Powers is having his players stay healthy, especially the pitchers.
SAN JOSE STATE
Season record: 5-1-1.Last season: 41-24.
Coach: Sam Piraro.
Career record: 455-345-3 (15th season).
Plays UH: March 1-2-3 in San Jose; March 23-24-25 in Honolulu.
Top players: Tim Adinolfil, lhp; Chris Sherman, rhp; Junior Ruiz, of; John Fagan, 3b.
Outlook: The pitching staff will be bolstered by the return of Jeremy Rogelstad and Andy Cook, both out last season with injuries.
Duplicating last season, the most successful in school history, probably depends on the contribution made by the transfers. Gabe Lopez (.500) has stepped in at second base and Ryan Adams (.300) is the new shortstop.
Someone has to step up and claim the starting catcher's job.
HAWAII
Season record: 5-4.Last season: 28-28.
Coach: Carl Furutani.
Career record: 5-4 (1st season).
Top players: Jeff Coleman, rhp; Patrick Scalabrini, 3b; Chad Boudon, lf; Danny Kimura, 1b; Wakon Childers and Bryan Lee, closers.
Outlook: The 'Bows are young with just three full-time position players in a starting mix that includes two freshmen and two redshirt freshmen.
Gregg Omori, who sat out last year when USF did not grant him a release, has filled the void at second base.
Rotating catchers Brian Bock and Jacob Flick and newcomers Cortland Wilson and Tim Montgomery need to help on offense.
Consistency by the starting pitchers and "holds" by the middle relievers will be crucial.
TEXAS CHRISTIAN
Season record: 4-5.Last season: 22-34.
Coach: Lance Brown.
Career record: 420-402 (15th season).
Plays UH: March 17-18-19 in Honolulu; April 14-15-16 in Fort Worth.
Top players: Ramon Moses, 2b; Erick Macha, ss; Marshall Wilson, cf; Chris Bradshaw, rhp; David Tombrella, rhp.
Outlook: The Horned Frogs have their starting outfield and middle infield back. Brown hopes this brings a return to solid defensive play like the 1998 TCU team that was second in the nation in fielding average.
Rebounding from a losing season may depend on how right-handers Chad Durham and Stan Newton recover from injuries
TCU is solid behind the plate and up the middle, but have battles going on for the starting berths at third and first base.
HAWAII-HILO
Season record: 3-8.Last season: 17-34.
Coach: Joey Estrella.
Career record: 503-541-3 (25th season).
Plays UH: May 11-12-13 in Hilo; May 17-18-19 in Honolulu.
Top players: Ryan Petersen, rf; Brian Rooke, cf; Ben Siff, rhp; Anthony Bernal, rhp; Mike Hobbs, 3b.
Outlook: The success of UHH's starting pitchers, all new, will be very important. Sergio Reyes has done well as a closer.
Petersen and Rooke are established outfielders and need to continue contributing offensively the way they have early.
The Vulcans rely on manufacturing runs with execution and speed. Holding the opponents on defense is key.
