QB club to honor athletes

Star-Bulletin staff

The 54th Honolulu Quarterback Club's Banquet of Champions is scheduled for Monday at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

The event will honor nearly four dozen individuals for their accomplishments in Hawaii sports during the past year.

Also honored will be the athletes with Hawaii ties who competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, as well as the state's national championship teams: Brigham Young-Hawaii (tennis), Hawaii Pacific (women's volleyball), St. Louis School (riflery and cheerleading), Aiea (Little League) and the Oahu Volleyball Club.

Individual awards include male and female athletes of the year for high school, adult and senior categories and the male and female sportspersons of the year. Also recognized will be the club's monthly award winners, community volunteer and service award winners.

Tickets may be purchased from the Quarterback Club for $30 by calling either 732-8805, or 261-5143. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.

Swimmers to PCC meet

Talia Wong, a Punahou School graduate, and Mililani High product Kyle Nakamoto will be competing for the Seattle University Redhawks in the Pacific Collegiate Championships this week in Long Beach, Calif.

Wong, a freshman, holds the 12th best time in the NAIA for 200-meter backstroke and is ranked 16th in the 100M back. Nakamoto, a junior, is ranked eighth in 100M butterfly.

The championships run through Saturday.

Hilo Invitational tees up

Three past champions, including last year's winner Greg Meyer, are entered in the 54-hole Hilo Invitational starting tomorrow at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Besides Meyer, who finished second in the Hawaii Pearl Open last Sunday, the other two former winners in the field are Kevin Hayashi (1999) and David Ishii (1998).

Also entered are Dean Wilson of Kaneohe, the 2000 Japan PGA Tour rookie of the year; three-time Japan amateur champion Hidemasa Hoshino, who recently turned pro, and local pros Lance Suzuki, Beau Yokomoto, Casey Nakama and Ron Castillo Jr.

Two women professionals from Hilo -- Christel Tomori, who plays on the SBC Futures Tour, and Camie Hoshino, who's playing in Japan -- will tee it up with the men in the open division. There is no women's flight.

Leading amateurs include Randy Shibuya, Ryan Kosh and Jonathan Ota.

HIC Pipeline Pro coming up

The 12th annual HIC Pipeline Pro surfing contest, the second event on this year's Hawaii Pro-Am Circuit, will be held between Feb. 20 and March 4 at the Banzai Pipeline.

Contest officials will wait for the best surf conditions to showcase the 175 local, national and international surfers expected to compete for a $20,000 purse.

The Pipeline event is sponsored by Hawaiian Island Creations.
