Crusaders shock Buffanblu

Punahou has a storied boys' soccer program -- with a state-high 14 championships under coach Bob Clague, including a run of seven out of eight in the late '80s and early '90s.

But an improbable day in soccer last week kept the Buffablu out of their second straight state tournament.

On the final day of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season, St. Louis stunned Punahou, 2-1. Kamehameha upset Iolani, 1-0, that same day to leap-frog over Punahou into second place.

"Before the game I told the seniors, 'This is your last game, we should try to go out and do this,' " St. Louis coach Ron Clavicillas said. "Our boys played to their capabilities. It was an incredible effort. They never quite reached it before that game."

Clavicillas had a message for the underclassmen after the game.

"I told them, 'I'm glad you have this win, now this is the next level you have to play at next year.' "

The Crusaders finished fourth in the ILH. Kamehameha went on to beat King Kekaulike in a playoff on Saturday for the final state berth.

ILH hoop face-off

Tomorrow, St. Louis plays Mid-Pacific and Kamehameha meets Damien in the tournament to decide the ILH's third state representative. The winners face off Friday at 7 p.m. at Iolani for a berth to the tournament.

OIA canoe championships Saturday

The OIA Outrigger Canoe Racing Championships is Saturday, from 12:30-3:30 p.m., at Keehi Lagoon. Students from 20 schools will be competing for the title and the Tesoro Hawaii Cup.

Basketball clinic in March

Iolani is hosting a basketball clinic March 29-30. The "Spring Break Individual Skills Clinic" at Iolani gym runs from 6-8:30 p.m. each night. It is open to boys and girls, ages 6-18. Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi will run the clinic, along with varsity players from the team. The cost is $50 per person. Deadline to register is March 23. For more information, call 943-2208.

Chargers ranked nationally in soccer

The Pearl City boys' soccer team is ranked No. 21 by Fox Sports this week among states that play soccer in the spring (Florida, Texas, California, Hawaii, Arizona, Louisiana and Mississippi). Iolani is on the honorable mention list, which mentions 25 teams.

The Baldwin and Mililani girls teams also received honorable mention in the poll.
