UH freshman Rene Krause finished tied for 10th at 79. BYU's Carrie Summerhays, the only golfer to break par, earned medalist honors with a 71.
Monis on U.S. team
Michael Monis of Honolulu has been named to the U.S. team that will compete in the World Fitness Federation's Bodybuilding Championships in Austria this June.Monis is one of five competitors selected by the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association. His most recent win came in 1998 when he was named Mr. Europe Natural.
Taylor Made golf opens
Seven of the top-ranked men's golf teams and seven top-ranked golfers headline the field of the 11th Taylor Made Intercollegiate Invitational beginning tomorrow on the Big Island.Heading the field is third-ranked Georgia Tech, which features the nation's top golfer in Bryce Molder. Also entered are John Klauk and Matt Brost of fifth-ranked Texas, and Hunter Mahan of No. 8 Southern Cal.
Play will be at both the Waikoloa Kings' and Beach Golf Courses tomorrow and Friday. Saturday's final round is at the Kings' Course.
The University of Hawaii-Hilo is the host of the 22-team event. Updates will be available on the Vulcan Web site at vulcans.uhh.hawaii.edu.
UH water polo at home
The ninth-ranked Hawaii women's water polo team takes on No. 14 UC San Diego in the Wahine's home opener tomorrow at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.Hawaii (5-0) holds a 7-0 edge in the series with the Tritons (2-2). The matches tomorrow and Saturday are both at 6 p.m.
USGA/HSJGA rules clinics
Ron Read of the U.S. Golf Association is conducting a free two-hour golf clinic for high school coaches and players tomorrow.The clinic will be held at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 532-0559 or 881-4027.
BMX racing opens
The Wheeler BMX season begins this week with a night race tomorrow and the first double-points race of the year on Friday.Racing is open to males and females with age-group competition ranging from 9-and-under to 51-and-older.
Signups are from 5:30-6:30 p.m. tomorrow and 2-3 p.m. Friday.
For the first time, a mountain bike class was added to the schedule.
Racers must be ABA members. Memberships are available at the track at Wheeler Army Air Field.

Alaska/Hawaii Challenge
The ninth annual Alaska/Hawaii Challenge is this weekend at Hawaii Raceway Park.The gates open at 5 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
Hawaii vs. Alaska team racing starts Friday along with bracket races and finishes Saturday. Sunday is family day, featuring fuel car and open bracket racing.
Tomorrow there will be a test and tune session with the gates opening at 6 p.m. For further information, call 841-3724.
Senior all-star baseball
An all-star baseball team from Kanagawa, Japan, with players aged 58 to 70, will play two games against the Hawaii All-Stars.The games are Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
The teams will use a rubberized baseball on a regulation diamond.
The Hawaii All-Stars include Lester Akeo, Lester Almeida, Edward Baba, Calvin Chai, Joseph Desa, Richard Desa, Kazu Kitagawa, Lester Lunasco, Jerry Mukai, John Nakamura, Edward Okada, Kenneth Souza, Louis Souza and Take Uesato.
The manager is Walter Robello, assisted by player/infield coach George Rego and coach F. Walker Chapman.
