Work not yet finished
near Lunalilo ramp

Question: When is the work on the Lunalilo Street off-ramp area going to be finished? It's been coned off since July, resulting in a lot of traffic jams.

Answer: The good news: Installation of the water line, which runs on Lunalilo Street from Keeaumoku Street to Ward Avenue, has been completed.

"We're now doing the tie-ins," a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said. That would include making the curb areas compliant with regulations set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"After the tie-ins are completed, we will be resurfacing Lunalilo Street," the spokesman said.

The bad news: It was estimated last week that it will take a total of 60 more working days to finish the project.

Q: The street lights are out on Bougainville Drive between Foster Village and Aliamanu Military Reservation at Pearl Harbor. They've been out for at least two months. This is very unsafe in the dark and I wish they would fix it.

Q: Two street lights on our street have been out since September. I reported them but nothing has been done. They're in the 2900 block of Ala Ilima Street in Salt Lake, just off Napuanani, on the left side of the street near the electrical facility.

Answer: The section of Bougainville in question is under the jurisdiction of the military, according to the city.

Actually, you can tell when the jurisdiction changes because the street lights are different, said George Vierra, supervisor for the city's street light operations. The tall galvanized lights that look like cobra heads are city-owned. City light poles also have black tags with ID numbers on them, Vierra said. The bronze-looking, squarish lights belong to the military, he said.

Vierra was attempting to get in touch with military officials to pass on your complaint.

Meanwhile, he said the lights on Ala Ilima were repaired Feb. 1, after Kokua Line passed on the second complaint. Although the complainant said the outages were reported in September, Vierra said he could not find a record of any complaint for those lights.

Call 523-4281 to report street light outages on city streets. (Call 831-6702 during normal work hours or leave a message at 831-6714 at any hour for outages on state roadways.)

The normal repair time is within a week, Vierra said. Repairs are handled by districts, as follows: Mondays, Area 1 -- Newtown Estates to Nuuanu Pali; Tuesdays, Area 2 -- Nuuanu Pali to Waialae Nui; Wednesdays, Area 3: Kalani Valley to Kaaawa; Thursdays, Area 4 -- Punaluu to Mililani Town; Fridays, Area 5: Waiawa to Waipio Gentry, including Makaha and Ewa/Ewa Beach.

Auwe

To me. On Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Ala Moana Center McDonald's, I did not follow the elderly man and a young woman with a 2- or 3-year-old child to their car. I saw the man slap the child on the face, then use his index finger to flick her nose because she failed to live up to his standards of social graces at the breakfast table. Standards most human beings know as adult behavior and obviously not to be expected of a very little girl. Auwe because I did not do my part and follow them to their car to get the license plate number and report them to Child Protective Services. -- No Name

To Scott and two police officers who helped my son on Jan. 13 at a car accident on Likelike Highway. We really appreciate it.-- Pamela Medeiros-Mercado
