Star-BulletinRick Rosenburg, program executive for the new Navy-Marine Corps Intranet, said the new communications system will replace the more than 200 different networks the Navy and Marine Corps now have.
Last October, Rosenburg's Texas-based Electronic Data Systems Corp. won the nearly $7 billion, five-year contract to build and maintain the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NCMI).
For Hawaii, Rosenburg said, the company will hire 200 to 300 technicians in October.
Any civilians who will be displaced by NCMI will be automatically hired by EDS, Rosenburg said. They will get an immediate 15 percent salary increase and a 3 percent signing bonus.
Hawaii will be one of six network operations centers Electronic Data Systems plans to open.
Rosenburg said he expects Hawaii's center to be in or near Pearl Harbor.
"The Intranet will provide increased security, worldwide accessibility, and interoperability with other military services," Navy Secretary Richard Danzig said.
