Softball player
injured by golf ball
returns to school

Amy Taniguchi returned to school yesterday, less than a week after getting hit in the mouth by a golf ball during a state tournament softball game at Rainbow Wahine Stadium on the University of Hawaii campus.

The Iolani senior was standing in the dugout when she was struck in the mouth by a golf ball during the Iolani-Baldwin game on Friday. One tooth was knocked out and her gumline was injured.

Several golf balls were hit onto the field during the game and police believe the balls were hit from the Johnson Hall Dormitory on Dole Street.

The Honolulu Police Department and CrimeStoppers are looking for any witnesses who were in the area on Friday, at around 7:30 p.m.

Anyone with information can call Detective Rodney Noguchi at 547-7212 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

CrimeStoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.

Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said the Taniguchi and her family are handling the situation very positively.

"Through the whole traumatic situation Amy never cried, even after getting hit and having to sit through the last game of her high school career," Shimabukuro said. "She never complained and never had a bitter attitude. I've known Amy and her family for years and (complaining is) just not in their nature."

Iolani aims for ILH title against Kamehameha

The Iolani boys' soccer team can claim the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship with a win or tie today against Kamehameha (7-2-2).

The Raiders head into the regular season finale with an 8-0-3 record. Punahou (7-1-3) must beat St. Louis and hope for an Iolani loss to force a tie for first place.

If that happens, the two teams would meet in a one-game playoff on Thursday.

The ILH champion earns a berth in the state tournament, which starts next Wednesday. The league's second-place team must play King Kekaulike, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, for the 12th and final state berth.

Pearl City dethrones champs

In the Oahu Interscholastic Association, the Pearl City boys ended Mililani's two-year run with a 1-0 win on Saturday. Richard Shinn scored the game's lone goal. It was the Chargers' first league title since 1990. Aiea beat Campbell, 4-0, in the third-place game and Kalani secured the OIA's fifth state tournament berth with a 2-0 win over Castle. The state tournament runs from Feb. 14-17.

OIA postseason hoops

The OIA basketball playoffs start tomorrow -- without defending champion Roosevelt.

The Rough Riders finished 5-5 and missed the tournament on a tiebreaker.

Top seeds Kalaheo (10-0) and Leilehua (9-0) have a first-round bye.

Tomorrow's games at Mililani are Kailua (6-4) vs. Aiea (5-4) and Mililani (7-2) vs. Farrington (5-5). The Governors won their final two games to slip into the postseason.

Radford (6-3) and Moanalua (5-5), and Kahuku (7-3) and Campbell (4-5) meet at Kahuku.

Kaimuki, Pearl City, Kalaheo and Leilehua swing into action in Friday's quarterfinals, and the winners of those games earn a state berth. Semifinals are Feb. 14 and the OIA title game is Feb. 15.

Waialua drowns out dry spell

Sophomore Garrett McNulty of Waialua streaked to a win in the 100-yard freestyle race at the OIA Western Division Swimming Championships to end a long dry spell for the Bulldogs, who hadn't won an individual title in recent memory.

"I would say it's been 20 years since we've done this," said Waialua coach Bob Atwood.
