After two seasons filming in the islands, "Baywatch Hawaii" has been cancelled.

The last original segment of the program will air the week of May 21, according to Kristin McEntee, the publicist for the show in Hawaii.

"Baywatch Hawaii" had been plagued by ratings that were not meeting expectations since it left its Los Angeles base of nine years.

"It's been a great run," McEntee said today.

"It lasted longer than we thought," he said. "I think everyone will look back on it as a positive thing for Hawaii. It's sad."

Brian Harris, president and CEO of Pearson Television, which produces the series, said today that although "Baywatch Hawaii" has been "an incredible success story," "the economics associated with bringing the program back could not be justified."

The decision to cancel the show was "extremely difficult," he said in a news release.
