AS I predicted to a friend two years ago, there'd be a spate of take-offs on Stanley Kubrick's classic film, "2001: A Space Odyssey" once this year arrived. Sure enough, every club and radio station in town was promoting some kind of space age odyssey to see in the new year. But now the leisurely Hawaiian Humane Society has one-upped one and all with its "2001: A Spay Odyssey." They're giving away 500 free spay/neuter surgeries for young cats and dogs. The reigning cats and dogs (and who could pass that one up?) can be signed up for appointments by pet owners from 8:30 to noon Saturday and Sunday at the Humane Society. No need to bring your pets. Or you can sign up by email through www.hawaiianhumane.org ... Neuter your
pooch for freeNO wonder Dennis Miller has been signed to rejoin the "Monday Night Football" team on ABC. He is not above schlepping goodies to the crew. Miller showed up at the Aloha Stadium taqueria run by Compadres' co-founder Rick Enos and bought a bunch of Compadres Fajita Bowls. Miller was familiar with the Mexican items from the taqueria because he's been to the ones Enos runs at the stadiums for the 49ers and Giants in San Francisco ...

WHILE 52 years have passed since the 1948 thriller "Key Largo" came out, there are certain elements therein which could have presaged the present day. Former isle photog Stan Rivera watched a video of the classic film recently and nearly fell out of his chair at one exchange. Edward G. Robinson, playing a gangster, of course, says to good guy Humphrey Bogart, "Let me tell you about Florida politicians. I make them out of whole cloth, just like a tailor makes a suit. I get their name in the newspaper. I get them some publicity and get them on the ballot. Then after the election, we count the votes. And if they don't turn out right, we recount them. And recount them again until they do." Maybe they could remake the film and star Chad Everett ...FORMER Honolulu Magazine publisher Dave Eyre suggests that when Bishop Museum director W. Donald Duckworth departs, we'll have lost not just a director but the most unreadable signature in the islands, and he sends proof. It looks very like someone running his pen rapidly in a circle to see if there's any ink in it ...
JUST as every waiter and cab driver in L.A. is a wannabe screenwriter, many waiters in Hawaii aspire to greater heights as well. Take Jean Jacques Dicker of Trattoria. He's busy between courses putting the final touches on two separate and disparate shows. "An Erotic Retrospective" is slated to open Friday at the Honolulu Art Gallery, while an exhibit of his photos of "Empty Rooms" is showing in Greece. JJ's photography is in the permanent collections of eight museums including the Centre George Pompidou in France and Kunsthaus Zurich ...

MAUI'S Plantation House Restaurant partner Chris Kaiwi was waxing eloquent when he said, "With all due respect to the Robert Mondavis and Chuck Wagners of the world, this is going to be like meeting the Pope." He was talking about the Rhone Valley's resident superstar winemaker, Michel Chapoutier, coming to do his first-ever-in-Hawaii winemaker's dinner at the Plantation House on Feb. 15. Says Kaiwi, "After reading about him for years and tasting his wines, I'm incredibly excited about actually meeting him." For reservations, call (808) 669-6299 ...
