Hawaii excelled in both facets yesterday to defeat Nevada, 65-52, in a WAC women's game.
It was the first WAC loss for the Wolf Pack in the Lawler Events Center this season.
Nevada had averaged 84 points a game in rolling to victories over the first four WAC visitors.
The Wolf Pack hit 43 percent of their field goal attempts in previous WAC home games. Yesterday, Hawaii held them to 31 percent.
Ashley Bastian, the most recent conference player of the week, had scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games.
Hawaii's Jana Gabrielova denied Bastian the ball, holding her to eight points with tough face-guarding defense.
"It took Bastian out of her normal cuts without the ball," Wahine coach Vince Goo said. "Jana covered her like glue."
Neither team shot well from the field in the first half and UH went to the locker room leading, 22-20.
"The coaches didn't think we needed to change anything because we were getting good looks and taking the shots we wanted," Goo said. "They just didn't fall."
One change was instituted. Instead of having the UH post players rotate laterally in the second half, they moved vertically.
This allowed the Wahine to get the ball down low, forcing the Wolf Pack to abandon their 2-3 zone, which had possibly caused the Wahine to miss nine consecutive 3-point shots.
Hawaii, which never trailed in the contest, was 25-for-26 from the charity stripe in the second half and 27-for-29 in the game, good for a .931 percentage, the second best percentage ever for Hawaii.
UH center Dainora Puida had a career-high 14 rebounds and completed her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points.
Crystal Lee had her second consecutive double-double with 10 rebounds and a team-high 17 points.
The Wahine, 4-0 on the road this season, returned home today. They host Fresno State Friday at 7 p.m. and Nevada Sunday at 5 p.m.
