When many in the best Rainbow Stadium crowd of the season (1,617 people) found their seats last night, only half an inning had gone by.

However, that was 35 minutes after the first pitch and the UCLA Bruins already held a 9-0 lead.

The score was 12-0 when Chad Boudon's three-run homer in the fourth inning accounted for all of Hawaii's runs.

The 16-3 UCLA win, the first of the season for the Bruins after two defeats, evened the three-game series at one game apiece. The finale was played this afternoon.

By the time the Rainbows (3-2) came to bat, what mattered most to Hawaii acting head coach Carl Furutani was damage control.

First he had to make sure to save enough pitching for today. It also was an opportunity to evaluate some pitchers who saw little action in the first four UH games.

Matt Le Ducq, a junior left-hander, pitched four innings. William Quaglieri, a redshirt freshman transfer from Purdue, hurled the final three innings.

"I wanted to stretch Le Ducq a bit," Furutani said. "I was pleased. He showed me a lot more than last week. He was a little sharper and had more movement on his ball.

"Quaglieri, as the year goes on, you'll see get a lot better. He shows flashes of what we want and those flashes will start repeating."

They each allowed two runs with Le Ducq striking out six and Quaglieri whiffing five Bruins.

Sean Yamashita, who started for the 'Bows, retired the first Bruin, but exited after 39 pitches without recording another out.

"I guess I just didn't have it," said the right-hander, who pitched five hitless innings against Cal State Sacramento last week.

"I thought I made good pitches, but they hit them. Flick (Jacob, the UH catcher) said they were right there. It was like they knew what was coming."

The big UCLA blows in that first inning were a three-run homer by Eric Reece and a two-run double by Ben Francisco, who was 4-for-5.

Senior left-hander Bobby Roe went six innings for the Bruins. Singles by Pat Scalabrini and Danny Kimura, ahead of Boudon's homer, was Roe's only rough spot.

He did walk six batters, which didn't please UCLA head coach Gary Adams or pitching coach Gary Adcock. However, Roe was able to make quality pitches when necessary, fanning six 'Bows.

The UCLA bullpen did its job, limiting Hawaii to one hit -- a two-out single by Gregg Omori in the ninth -- over the last three innings.

The Bruins also pulled an rare double play.

With runners on first and second, Derek Honma struck out on a ball that bounced away from UCLA catcher Josh Arhart.

The runners took off, but Hawaii's Tim Montgomery, on second base, saw that Arhart retrieved the ball quickly.

As Montgomery tried to retreat to second, Cortland Wilson pulled into second from first base.

Arhart ran toward Montgomery and tagged him for a unique unassisted twin killing, recording one out at home and the other at second base.
