Baldwin, Pearl City
state tourney test today

The matchup of two of the premier pitchers in the state is worthy of of a championship game.

But when Pearl City's Loihi McKeague and Baldwin's Shannon Tabion face off today in the Chevron State Softball Championships, it will be for a berth in the semifinals.

McKeague pitched Pearl City past Leilehua, 8-0, yesterday in the first round of the tournament at Rainbow Wahine Stadium, setting up a game with third-seeded Baldwin (12-0) at 4 p.m.

"Those are two of the top three pitchers in the state," said Mililani coach Mike Okimoto, whose 12-0, top-seeded team plays Kailua today at 7 p.m.

Leo Sing Chow -- the third pitcher in the trio -- leads Kamehameha against No. 4 seed Hilo (9-0) in the first game of the day at 2:30 p.m.

Two-time defending state champion Iolani (13-2) meets Kaimuki at 5:30 p.m.

McKeague was more dominant against the Mules than the line score of six hits and four strikeouts indicates.

In four of the seven innings, McKeague threw 10 or fewer pitches. She never went to three balls on a hitter, and only four times did she reach a two-ball count.

Of her 68 pitches, 55 were strikes.

McKeague also produced at the plate, bashing two doubles and single and knocking in a run.

Soccer

The Shinn brothers -- Richard and Robert -- didn't change their scoring habits for the Oahu Interscholastic Association boys' soccer tournament.

For the fifth time in 11 games both knocked in a goal. Yesterday it gave Pearl City a 2-0 semifinal win over Aiea at Mililani.

Richard found the net in the 31st minute and Robert -- the league's leading scorer -- delivered 11 minutes later to lift the Chargers (11-0-0) into the title game against Mililani (9-1-1).

Only once this year has an opponent managed to shut out both Shinns in a game.

Mililani beat Campbell, 3-1, in the other semifinal, on goals by Jarrett Razon, Timmy Liu and Kilipaki Kanae.

In the girls' consolation semifinals, Kailua outscored Kalaheo, 3-1, in penalty kicks. The game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes. Kaiser edged Kalani, 1-0.

Kailua and Kaiser play tomorrow for the fifth OIA state tourney berth.
