Repairs force
SS Independence to
cancel cruise

Star-Bulletin staff

American Classic Voyages Co. said it will take the 860-passenger S.S. Independence out of service for the last week in March to put it in dry dock at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for repairs. A voyage around the islands that was scheduled to start March 24 has been canceled and the Independence will resume sailing March 31, the company said.

The company's other Hawaii ship, the ms Patriot, is fully booked and cannot take the people who were booked on the Independence, so they are being offered full refunds and a 50 percent discount off a future voyage. Repairs will be made on the ship's bow thruster, used in docking the vessel. The company said until the repairs are made tugboats will assist the Independence when entering and leaving port.
