Jana Gabrielova enjoys a fast-paced basketball game. Gabrielova
By Al Chase
on the run for UH
Star-Bulletin"I love to run the whole game so I don't get cold," she said.
That isn't always possible in the University of Hawaii's half-court offensive scheme.
It was different last night. Rice, a young, but quick and talented team. was the UH opponent at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Wahine had to display team quickness, especially on transition defense. They did well in controlling the game's tempo.
And Gabrielova dismantled the Owls' full-court press and scored a career-high 24 points, many on slicing drives down the lane.
The 70-53 Western Athletic Conference victory moved Hawaii back into second place.
"When coach calls the play, he knows I can penetrate. I can drive or dish the ball," Gabrielova said.
"She ran a pretty good show and did a great job on defense," UH head coach Vince Goo said.
Just before tip off, the Wahine assistant coaches convinced Goo that Gabrielova should be guarding Rice's Kara Liggett.
"We needed to deny her the ball. When it's in Kara's hands she scores, " Goo said.
Liggett, the Owls' top 3-point shooter, was 3-for-12 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc.
UH took the lead for good on Kylie Galloway's layup with 13:23 left in the second half.
During a seven-minute span, the Wahine converted four three-point plays, the last by Natasja Allen at 8:18 that increased their lead to 10 points.
Allen, who replaced the foul-plagued Galloway in the first half and again in the second half when the UH captain was head butted and suffered a mild concussion, finished with seven points.
"Coach always says to be ready," said Allen, a 6-1 sophomore from Port Orchard, Wash.
The Owls substituted often, using all 12 players, but that didn't force Goo to alter his plans.
"We rotated people in as we needed them," he said.
"Christa Brossman came in and played a heck of a game in the first half. Karena Greeny came in in the second half and played real well."
And, when Rice cut its deficit to six points with six minutes left, the Wahine remained composed.
"We did a lot better job the last three, 3 1/2 minutes with execution. That comes from learning and that goes straight to the point guard," Goo said.
UH plays at Fresno State Friday and Nevada Sunday.
