PRACTICE was quietly intense for the Hawaii women's basketball team this week.

The Wahine had some problems to deal with. Turnovers, execution and composure come to mind.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane bothered Hawaii two weeks ago with a full-court, trapping press.

The Wahine handled that well last night in winning the WAC game, 63-53, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

But once the Wahine reached the front court, the offense didn't always click in the first half.

"We were a bit out of control, a bit on tiptoes the first half. We didn't play under control as individuals when we had the basketball," Hawaii head coach Vince Goo said.

"When that happens, you miss the short shot, fumble passes."

Hawaii had nine turnovers in the opening half, but cut that to seven after intermission.

Trailing by seven points with 2:59 left in the first half, the Wahine managed a halftime tie at 28 on Karena Greeny's layup with 23 seconds showing on the clock.

Crystal Lee, who Goo credited with playing well offensively and being the steadiest Wahine, made three 3-pointers as UH whittled the Tulsa lead down.

"I think Crystal really had her feet under her and played with control," Goo said.

"The coaches told me in practice, if I have the 3, I need to be a threat from the 3-point arc. When I had the opportunity, I tried to make the most of it," Lee said.

"Last game I passed up some shots and I guess that's one aspect of my game they need."

The difference after the break was the whole team became more deliberate with the feet and body movements, according to Goo.

The layups suddenly began to fall as the Wahine had success in the paint and along the baseline.

Eight layups -- three by Kylie Galloway, two each by Lee and Jana Gabrielova and one by Dainora Puida -- fell through the twine as Hawaii built 13-point lead, 52-39, with 9:23 left.

"It was a size factor. Our wings were bigger than their wings. It was a mismatch. We try to take advantage of a mismatch," said Lee who led UH with 21 points.

Gabrielova, scoreless in the first half, had eight points in the second half. Two came on a driving layup after a steal at midcourt.

The 5-foot-6 point guard drove the lane twice from the top of the key, making a layup the first time and getting fouled the next time.

"The last two games I've been going down. I don't know what's wrong. I don't understand why," Gabrielova said.

"Coach made an adjustment in the offense and said I have to work with my left hand. I was using my right hand too much and they (opponents) know that."

And one way to get the ball from the right to the left hand is with the behind-the-back dribble.

Gabrielova executed that maneuver three times to the delight of the 882 fans in attendance.

The Wahine defense also improved in the second half.

"I think we played their personnel a little better. We got a little lazy and lost some responsibilities in the first half," Goo said.

The Golden Hurricane's field goal shooting percentage fell from 42 in the first half to 31 percent.

The Wahine reaped another benefit from this. Since Tulsa wasn't making as many baskets, it had fewer opportunities to use the full-court trap defense.

Golden Hurricane head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller finally called it off.

Hawaii hosts Rice tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Owls defeated host San Jose State, 77-67, last night.

The Owls are quicker -- and athletic -- probably why they were able to limit San Jose State guards Danada Smith and Atari Parker to a total of 37 points last night.

Smith and Parker combined for 58 points against UH last Sunday.

Rice (3-3 conference, 11-7 overall) is 5-4 on the road this year and has split six games with Hawaii in the short series.
