Kaimuki resumes
its winning ways

By Ben Freedman
Special to the Star-Bulletin

Kaimuki basketball coach Stephen Lee was worried before last night's game against Farrington.

The Bulldogs were coming off a quadruple overtime loss at Kailua on Wednesday -- the kind of loss that can demoralize a team.

"We really had a bad practice (Thursday)," Lee said. "You could see it in the kids. They were drained emotionally and physically.

"Coming in today, I didn't know what to expect. But I told the kids, if we win today, we're going to be in the playoff picture."

Kaimuki responded well -- fending off Farrington's second half charge to win its final home game of the season, 59-53, yesterday in an Oahu Interscholastic Association game.

Kaimuki improved to 6-2 to stay right behind second-place Kahuku (7-2), which also won yesterday.

The Bulldogs meet the Red Raiders on Tuesday and finish against Roosevelt. The OIA Tournament begins Feb. 8.

Kaimuki's 15-point lead evaporated yesterday, and the Governors (3-5) tied the game at 48 late in the fourth quarter when Jason Domingo made one of his four 3-pointers.

To combat the Bulldogs' big men, Farrington cluttered the inside with defenders. That's when the Kaimuki guards answered the call.

"The first half, Kila (Kamakawiwo'ole) and the inside players really carried us," Lee said. "I told the guards, in the second half, for us to be a good team, you guys gotta step up.

"I encouraged them to shoot it because I saw one (Farrington) guard defending both (Kaimuki) guards. I kept on telling them shoot the ball, shoot the ball."

The Bulldogs did just that.

With the score tied at 51, Brandon Hayashida drained a jumper near the top of the key to give Kaimuki a 53-51 edge.

The Bulldogs never looked back as Justin Wong iced the game with six unanswered points, highlighted by an out-of-control jumper on the baseline.

Daniel Tautofi led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Justin Faimealelei and Kamakawiwo'ole each added 12 more.

"I told the kids, the guards are what basically made us win in the end," Lee said. "The big men took care of what they had to do in the first half and we let (Farrington) get back in the game and it pretty much came down to the guards in the end."

Domingo led all scorers with 23 points.
