Aiea pushes Moanalua
out of tourney

Star-Bulletin staff

Moanalua won't repeat as the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' soccer champion this year.

Aiea bounced the defending champion Menehunes from the OIA Tournament with a 2-1 win yesterday in the opening round. Nadine Manangan and Lynnsey Ho provided the offense for Na Alii (8-1-1). Moanalua finishes at 3-5-2.

The last time a team won back-to-back titles was Mililani in 1992-93.

The only upset of first day was Kalaheo's 3-0 win over Leilehua (5-5-0). The Mustangs (4-3-3), the fifth seed from the East, face unbeaten Kahuku today in the quarterfinals.

The Red Raiders (9-0-0), led by Natasha Kai, the Eastern Division's leading scorer, were the only OIA team to go through the season unbeaten and untied.

In other first round matches, Kalani (5-3-2) beat Waialua, 1-0, on a goal by Jillian Okamoto, and Kailua (7-1-2) pounded Radford, 7-2, behind three goals by Sarah Takekawa.

The Bulldogs finish their season at 4-5-1 and the Rams at 4-6-0.

Aiea tackles Kaiser (6-1-2) and high-powered Mililani, with 29-goal scorer Mele French, plays Kalani in games today at Mililani.

Kailua and Pearl City (8-1-0) face off at Kahuku in the other quarterfinal today.

Softball

Iolani and Kamehameha took care of business yesterday to force a one-game playoff for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship.

Iolani beat Mid-Pacific, 12-5, and Kamehameha edged Sacred Hearts, 6-4.

The Warriors and Raiders finished the regular season 12-2, and square off in a one-game playoff on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ala Wai Field.

Kamehameha and Iolani split a pair of tightly contested games during the regular season.

"I think it's going to be that way again," Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow said about Saturday's playoff game. "We're both playing for a better seed in the (state) tournament."

The winner gets one of the top four seeds at state playoffs and gets a first-round bye.

"It's just one less day the pitcher have to pitch and the players have to perform," said Sing Chow, who is in his first year as the Warriors' coach.

In another ILH game, University senior Skylar Tokumine finished her softball career in style by hurling a five-inning perfect game against La Pietra. She recorded seven strikeouts in the 10-0 win.
