After winning its third consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association championship this past weekend, Mililani may finally earn the top seed in the state tournament. Mililani makes case
for top seedThe Trojans, who have won 40 straight regular and post season OIA games under the guidance of Mike Okimoto, were seeded second last year, and lost to No. 1 seed Iolani in the state title game.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion this year will have at least two losses, so either Mililani or Baldwin will most likely earn the top seed at the tournament, which runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.
Behind the pitching of Miki Asamura, Mililani edged Kaimuki, 3-2, in the semifinals and got by Pearl City, 2-0, in the final on Saturday. In that game, Asamura went the distance, giving up three runs, walking one and striking out three. Loihi McKeague of Pearl City allowed only one hit -- a first-inning single. The Trojans scored in the first on a passed ball and tacked on another run in the third on a couple of errors and a wild pitch.
ILH wrapping up:
Iolani and Kamehameha both play their final regular season games today. Iolani faces Mid-Pacific and Kamehameha plays Sacred Hearts. The Lancers knocked off the Buffanblu earlier in the month. The Raiders and Warriors are 11-2, and if they win today, there will be a one-game playoff on Saturday for the league title. Both teams have already qualified for the state tournament.
OIA soccer playoffs begin
The OIA soccer playoffs start today, with four girls' matches. The girls play the first two rounds today and tomorrow. The semis are Jan. 30. The boys play Friday, Saturday and Jan. 31. The championship game for both boys and girls is Feb. 3, at Pearl City.On the girls' side, Mililani (8-0-1) and Kahuku (9-0-0) earned the tops seeds and a bye. Kaiser and Pearl City also received byes. In the boys' bracket, Pearl City (9-0-0), Castle (7-2-1), Mililani and Kalani earned byes into the second round.
The Mililani boys are two-time defending league champions and Moanalua -- who snuck in as a sixth seed -- is the defending girls' champion.
