Question: Whatever happened to the article on Waimanalo that was to be published in National Geographic? National Geo
February to include
Waimanalo storyAnswer: The magazine will publish a feature story in its February issue on the Waimanalo community as part of its ZIP code USA series entitled, "96795: The Hawaiian's Hawaii."
Tom O'Neil, senior writer at National Geographic, toured Waimanalo in July. He visited Sherwood Forest Beach and Kaiona Beach, where canoe paddlers practiced and local fishermen grilled their catches.
Waimanalo was chosen because of its native Hawaiian community, where "an estimated half of the roughly 9,000 inhabitants in zip code 96795 claim at least 50 percent Hawaiian blood," O'Neil wrote in his article.
O'Neil spoke with Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele at the Sovereignty Camp, enjoyed backyard barbecues and joined schoolchildren on a sailboat as part of a Hui Malama o Ke Kai program.
"It was a rich place for me," O'Neil said. "They are fortunate to be cut off from the city," he said, acknowledging the community's cultural ties to hula, canoe paddling and growing native plants.
O'Neil's story is accompanied by photos taken by Jodi Cobb.
