Clay Stanley has taken the first step toward realizing his Olympic dream.

The former University of Hawaii opposite yesterday was one of seven former college players invited to join the USA men's national training team in Colorado Springs, Colo., following tryouts earlier this month.

The squad's first competition will be against Japan in April.

The 6-foot-9 Stanley left UH after his junior year last season.

The Kaiser High graduate had team-highs of 54 aces and 520 kills in 2000 and also set a school record with 50 kills in a five-set victory over UCLA in 1999.

Also named to the team are middle blockers Colin McMillan (Ohio State) and Guy Nembhard (Lewis); outside hitter Scott Lane (IUPU-Ft. Wayne), liberos Rich Lambourne (BYU) and Aaron Shepardson (Baylor) and setter Donald Suxho (Southern Cal).

"This is a very young and inexperienced group, but I think a number of the players we have here have great talent and potential to be good international players," said USA coach Doug Beal. "It is going to take some time. As good as they are, we just have to get them some experience."
