Kauai correspondentBailey, 50, died in his sleep Thursday night. He had not been ill, according to Daniel Hamada, superintendent of the Kauai School District.
Bailey's wife, Fahy, and mother, Amelia, and several other members of his family attended a special assembly at the school on Friday and spoke to the children.
"For most of them, it was the first time anyone they knew had died," Hamada said.
A Honolulu native, Bailey played football, basketball and baseball at Punahou School and was state high school batting champion in 1967 and 1968. He attended Willamette University on a baseball scholarship and was graduated in 1972. He received a master's degree from the University of Hawaii in 1978.
Bailey coached football and baseball at Punahou. He moved to Kauai in 1981and was the varsity football coach at Kapaa High School. Bailey worked as a counselor at Hanalei and Kilauea elementary schools and Kapaa and Intermediate and Kapaa High School, where he later was vice principal. He had been principal of Kapaa Elementary School since 1989.
Shirley Kauahi, a former vice principal at the school, has been named interim principal.
On Kauai, a memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa.
On Saturday at 3 p.m., a memorial service will be conducted at the Punahou School Chapel in Honolulu.
Besides his wife and mother, Bailey is survived by son Kaulana, sister Beryl Blaich and brothers James, Speed and John.
