Cinema chain tries to avoid bankruptcy

NEW YORK -- Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corp., the biggest publicly traded U.S. cinema chain, said it plans to close or sell 112 theaters as it tries to trim its poor-performing movie houses and avoid bankruptcy. The company took a charge of $122.4 million in the fiscal third quarter ended Nov. 30 to close the theaters, which have about 675 screens, or 23 percent of the total. There will be job cuts associated with the closures, Loews spokeswoman Mindy Tucker said, but she did not say how many.
