IT'S not often a player gets a second chance to win a game. Castles Pedrina makes
good on second chanceSOFTBALL
By Tim Crouse
Special to the Star-BulletinLia Pedrina got that chance yesterday -- and succeeded.
Pedrina lined a single to right field to drive in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Castle to a 5-4 victory over Campbell in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Softball Tournament.
Castle (9-2) plays at Pearl City (8-2) -- the second seed from the Western Division -- in one of four quarterfinal games today. The winners secure berths in the state tournament.
In Castle's regular-season finale last week against Roosevelt, Pedrina was at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, with her team down by two and runners on second and third.
Pedrina lined out to third base to end the game. The loss cost the Knights a shot at the East title and a first-round bye.
Even more was riding on the outcome of yesterday's contest -- the loser's season would be over -- when Pedrina stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and Castle trailing, 4-3.
"It was the same situation, only this time she came through," Knights' coach Jon Berinobis said.
In her first three at-bats, the right-hander pulled the ball.
In her fourth, she took a different approach.
"I was thinking, 'try to go to right field,' because I usually pull," Pedrina said.
She lined a 1-1 pitch into right, scoring Kassie Young and Shana Silva.
Silva just beat the relay throw from pitcher Jenna Sylva, sliding into home ahead of the tag for the winning run.
The inning started with a perfect bunt down the third base line by Anuhea Young. Silva drove in Young for the first run of the inning with a one-out, bases-loaded infield hit.
"We all came in off the field after the third out (of the top of the seventh), and said this was our last shot," Berinobis said.
Pedrina pitched a complete game, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking one.
Sylva also went the distance for Campbell (4-6), striking out four and walking none.
Berinobis knows that his team must play better against a Pearl City team whose only loss came against undefeated Mililani.
"We have to play better defensively and try to cut down on (their) hitting," he said.
In other first round games yesterday, Waianae also scored in the bottom of the seventh, beating Kaiser, 6-5; Leilehua defeated Kahuku, 4-1, and Moanalua downed Waipahu, 6-0.
No. 1 East seed Kailua hosts Leilehua, Kaimuki hosts Waianae and the West's top seed, Mililani, hosts Moanalua in the other games today.
Berinobis said he'll make a game-time decision on whether to start Silva or Pedrina on the mound.
Loihi McKeague will get the start for Pearl City, and Chargers' coach Cheyene Thompson said McKeague will likely pitch the entire tournament. The senior pitched every game of the regular season, and her 8-1 record mirrors the teams' record.
The semifinals are tomorrow and the fifth-place game is Friday. The winner of that game is the fifth and final OIA representative in the state tournament.
The OIA title game is Saturday at noon at Hawaii Pacific Field.
