TULSA, Okla. -- A quick look at the offensive statistics might lead one to believe the University of Hawaii women's basketball team was in trouble last night. Road win for Wahine
Staff & wire reports
Appearances can be deceiving. Despite shooting 38 percent from the field, 63 percent from the charity stripe and turning the ball over 22 times, the Wahine pulled out a 54-45 win over Tulsa.
The WAC victory gave UH a sweep in its two-game road trip.
"There is nothing better than sweeping on the road," UH coach Vince Goo said. "And at the same time, you need to learn from it. You can't sit back and say 'we're good.' "
There were stretches last night where the Wahine weren't very good, stumbling on offense with bad passes, traveling violations and poor decision making.
That was the case for the first 13 minutes. But Kylie Galloway's three-point play started a 15-2 run that put UH ahead 30-19 at intermission.
"We got the lead by executing really well. We wanted to attack, go inside, get the free throws and layups," he said.
The Golden Hurricane coaches were aware of UH's success with 3-pointers against Texas-El Paso and tried to negate that with a pressure man defense.
The power game was the way to go for Hawaii. Unfortunately, the Wahine's inside attack was off with a number of missed layups.
However, this did not affect their play at the other end. The Wahine held the Golden Hurricane to 28 percent from the field, limited top scorer Leela Farr to just six field goal attempts, and controlled the boards.
Christen Roper had 11 rebounds and Dainoa Puida had 10, and they blocked three shots apiece.
"We defended for 80 minutes on this trip," Goo said.
"We were satisfied we competed both nights really hard. As a coach, you can't ask for more than that.
"If we're dissatisfied, it's because we didn't play with a lot of composure in the second half last night. We didn't use the clock and didn't execute properly in the half court. But that's fixable."
The Wahine return home today to prepare for Sunday's game against San Jose State. The 5 p.m. contest at the Stan Sheriff Center will be preceded by an alumna game at 3 p.m.
