Iolani wins battle
of unbeatens, takes over
first place in ILH

By Jack Danilewicz

Special to the Star-Bulletin

For now, when it comes to Travis McGaughy, Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi will welcome his production but withhold his promotion.

"We like him off the bench," said Mugiishi of his sixth man. "He usually comes in for Bronson (Melemai), who we like in the game at the beginning to set the tempo. He always give us a spark. And that's his job."

Last night, the 6-foot junior came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points, including 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions during a decisive third quarter run, as Iolani defeated St. Louis, 47-28, in a battle of unbeatens at McCabe Gymnasium.

With the win, the Raiders improved to 4-0 and took over sole possession of first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. St. Louis dropped to 2-1 in the ILH. The teams meet again Feb. 2 at Iolani.

McGaughy says he accepts his role.

"I guess the key word is patience," he said. "I just try and do the best with it when I come off the bench. In the first half I wasn't connecting on my 3-pointers, but in the second half my teammates found me and I just drained them."

Iolani was 7-of-14 from 3-point range, with McGaughy and Bobby Webster connecting on three apiece. The first of McGaughy's 3-pointers, which came as the first half expired, lifted Iolani to a 20-18 lead at halftime. Webster finished with 12 points.

Iolani freshman guard Derrick Low, who entered the game as the league's second-leading scorer, was limited to seven points, but played no small role in the Raiders' third quarter run, finding teammates for open 3-pointers.

"Derrick is one of the best freshmen in the country, and I think he's capable of breaking a team down with penetration," said Mugiishi. "We told him with all of the 3-point shooters we have, take it down the middle, suck the defense in, and there is going to be somebody open and ready to shoot the ball."

A 3-pointer by Low with 5:14 to play in the third quarter marked the last of six lead changes in the game and gave Iolani a 23-21 advantage. Moments later, after a St. Louis turnover, Webster stepped up to bury a 3-pointer of his own from the left wing, and Tyler McCready followed with a reverse layup off his own rebound, and suddenly the Raiders were ahead 28-21.

McGaughy then made 3-pointers from the baseline on each of the Raiders' next two possessions to extend the lead to 34-23 with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter. St. Louis would get no closer than 12 in the fourth quarter.

"When you give up a big lead, they spread you out and are able to force your hand a little bit," said St. Louis coach Delbert Tengan. "They shot the ball well in the third quarter, and that's basically what broke the game open."

Softball

Due to an error in figuring out tiebreakers, Roosevelt and Farrington -- who tied with Kahuku and Kaiser at 4-5 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division -- were mistakenly placed in the OIA Tournament.

Instead, Kahuku will represent the West as the fifth-place team and Kaiser as the sixth.

The revised tournament bracket has Kahuku traveling to Leilehua and Kaiser playing at Waianae on Tuesday in the opening round.

Soccer

Aiea did the unthinkable -- holding the high-powered Mililani offense scoreless -- and salvaged a tie in OIA girls' soccer yesterday, keeping their slim chances of earning a share of the Western Division title alive.

The Trojans (7-0-1) entered the match averaging eight goals a game, but still took over sole possession of first place with the tie.

Mililani has 22 points, Pearl City 21 and Aiea 19. All three teams close out the regular season on Tuesday.

There was just one goal scorer in three other girls' matches yesterday; Waialua and Campbell, and Waipahu and Nanakuli also played to scoreless draws.

Meaghan Rivera scored twice as Radford topped Waianae, 2-0.

In boys' action, Mililani edged Aiea, 2-0, to jump into second place ahead of Na Alii.

Campbell, Leilehua and Radford all secured OIA Tournament berths with victories, joining Pearl City, Mililani and Aiea.

Shane McConnell tallied the lone goal for Radford in a 1-0 win over Waianae.

The Rams completed their regular season with 12 points, and the Seariders have nine points with a game left. But a win for Waianae in their season finale against Aiea still wouldn't be enough -- since Radford would win the tiebreaker due to its victory yesterday.
