Kailua High teacher up for national award

A majority of Hawaii's public elementary schools met or exceeded the national norm on the 2000 Stanford Achievement Test, according to the state Department of Education.

Spokesman Greg Knudsen said, "Nearly two-thirds of the elementary schools are meeting or exceeding the national norms."

He said there is an impression among Hawaii's students that they do not perform well on standard achievement tests.

These results show they can, Knudsen said.

Although the Department of Education recognizes Hawaii students' improvement on the test scores, officials say it cannot reflect a school's entire education program and should not be used as a sole indicator of success.

To be included in the list, a school had to have at least 77 percent of its students scoring in average or high stanines in both the math and reading assessments.

The department will release the school-by-school results within two weeks.

national award

Star-Bulletin

Hawaii's Teacher of the Year is among the four finalists for National Teacher of the Year.

Derek Minakami, a science teacher at Kailua High School, joins teachers from Alabama, South Carolina and Vermont in as finalists.

The 2001 National Teacher of the Year will be announced in April.

Minakami is only the second Hawaii teacher to advance to the finals.

"We in the Department of Education are extremely honored and proud that one of our own is among the national finalists," Superintendent Paul LeMahieu said.

LeMahieu added, "His exceptional professional qualities make Derek an excellent representative of all teachers in Hawaii -- and the nation."
