Star-BulletinSpokesman Greg Knudsen said, "Nearly two-thirds of the elementary schools are meeting or exceeding the national norms."
He said there is an impression among Hawaii's students that they do not perform well on standard achievement tests.
These results show they can, Knudsen said.
Although the Department of Education recognizes Hawaii students' improvement on the test scores, officials say it cannot reflect a school's entire education program and should not be used as a sole indicator of success.
To be included in the list, a school had to have at least 77 percent of its students scoring in average or high stanines in both the math and reading assessments.
The department will release the school-by-school results within two weeks.
