The service, 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral on Fort Street Mall, is open to the public. Catholic Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will preside at the liturgy, which will feature prayers to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance for government officials.
The Red Mass got its name from the color of the vestments traditionally used for a Mass of the Holy Spirit. It has been a tradition in Hawaii since 1955, modeled on an annual observance in Washington, D.C., and following a 700-year-old European tradition.
What public policies can do to support and strengthen families, especially those who are disenfranchised and have special needs, will be the theme of the talk, according to a release.
Officials expected to attend include Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, state Senate President Robert Bunda, state House Speaker Calvin Say and Chief Justice Ronald Moon.
