at Red Mass

Circuit Judge James R. Aiona Jr. will be the guest speaker at the Red Mass, celebrated annually at the beginning of a state Legislature.

The service, 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral on Fort Street Mall, is open to the public. Catholic Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will preside at the liturgy, which will feature prayers to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance for government officials.

The Red Mass got its name from the color of the vestments traditionally used for a Mass of the Holy Spirit. It has been a tradition in Hawaii since 1955, modeled on an annual observance in Washington, D.C., and following a 700-year-old European tradition.

What public policies can do to support and strengthen families, especially those who are disenfranchised and have special needs, will be the theme of the talk, according to a release.

Officials expected to attend include Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, state Senate President Robert Bunda, state House Speaker Calvin Say and Chief Justice Ronald Moon.

Jehovah's Witnesses
host Open Table tour

The Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Kalihi Valley will be the setting as the monthly Open Table Pilgrimage resumes Jan. 21.

After a 4 p.m. service, visitors will tour the church center at 2055 Kamehameha IV Road.

The Open Table, a discussion group open to members of all religions, sponsors the monthly tour.

Each month, a different denomination hosts the visit and shares information and worship services.

The series is open to the public. For information, call 263-8567.
