Yokozuna pair
post easy wins in
New Year sumo

TOKYO, Jan. 12 (Kyodo) - Yokozuna Musashimaru and Takanohana posted a pair of easy wins over maegashira-ranked foes Friday to remain the unbeaten co-leaders six days into the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.

Musashimaru slapped top maegashira Tochisakae (1-5) out of the ring at Ryogoku Kokugikan and Takanohana made quick work of Tosanoumi (3-3) as he waltzed the fifth-ranked maegashira over the straw border to keep pace with his grand champion rival.

The chase pack - one win behind at 5-1 - meanwhile, was trimmed to three lower-ranked wrestlers, including Kyokutenho, a No. 8 maegashira from Mongolia who slapped down Tamakasuga (2-4) in an early bout.

Mongolian compatriot Asashoryu, a makuuchi newcomer on the 12th maegashira rung, however, fell out of the pack at 4-2 when he misfired with an ill-advised arm drag attempt and was bulldozed out by No. 7 Kotoryu (5-1).

Joining Kyokutenho and Kotoryu at 5-1 is No. 14 Asanowaka, who opened the day's makuuchi division bouts by shoving out Terao (2-4), who was wrestling up from the second-tier juryo division.

Nearing the midway point of the tourney, the holders of sumo's three top ranks after yokozuna - ozeki, sekiwake and komusubi - continued to struggle as komusubi upset both sekiwake and only three of the four ozeki could manage wins.

Komusubi Tochinonada notched his second straight sekiwake scalp, driving Wakanosato out to leave both wrestlers at 4-2. Takanowaka marched out Kotomitsuki for only his second win as the runner-up at the Kyushu tourney in November fell to his fifth loss.

At the second highest rank of ozeki, Kaio threw Takanonami into the ringside seats for his fourth win while tagging the top maegashira and former ozeki with his fifth straight loss.

Miyabiyama, also 4-2, drove out Kaiho (1-5) for a one-sided win while Dejima drew level at 3-3 with a frontal force-out win over No. 2 maegashira Kotonowaka (3-3).

Musoyama, however, could not give the ozeki a sweep for the day as former sekiwake Tochiazuma plowed out the tourney's defending champion and left both wrestlers at 3-3.

In an early bout, Mongolia's 10th-ranked maegashira Kyokushuzan (3-3) tripped 11th-ranked Minatofuji (2-4) out of the ring from behind.

Yokozuna
Musashimaru and
Takanohana share
lead at 6-0

TOKYO (AP) - Two yokozuna (grand champions) Musashimaru and Takanohana both had easy victories Friday, remaining in the two-way lead at 6-0 after the sixth day of the 15-day New Year Grand Sumo tournament.

Trailing the champions at 5-1 were Mongolian Kyokutenho and two other lower-ranked wrestlers, Kotoryu and Asanowaka.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, gave a series of severe hand thrusts at No. 1 maegashira Tochisakae's neck and chest and drove him out, wowing spectators with the slapping noise echoing through the Ryogoku arena in downtown Tokyo. Tochisakae is 1-5.

Takanohana firmly gripped Tosanoumi (3-3) from both sides as soon as they rose from the initial squatting position, then bulldozed him out.

Yokozuna Akebono, or Hawaii-born Chad Rowan, who won the last tournament with a 14-1 record in November, is staying out of the current 15-day tournament because of pain in his knees.

No. 8 maegashira (senior wrestler) Kyokutenho, or Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, pulled No. 5 maegashira Tamakasuga (2-4) by the neck and pushed him to the ground.

Kotoryu, No. 7 maegashira, survived a throwing attempt by No. 12 maegashira Asashoryu (4-2), or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, and threw the opponent out of the ring.

Asanowaka, No. 14 maegashira, the lowest in the senior makuuchi, drove out Terao, who is No. 2-ranked in the lower juryo division. Terao (2-4) was substituting for a wrestler who is sitting out the tournament.

In other major bouts, ozeki (champion) Miyabiyama (4-2) dragged No. 3 maegashira Kaiho (1-5) to the ringside before knocking him out with a decisive push.

Ozeki Musoyama was driven out of the ring as he turned his back to Tochiazuma after failing to throw the opponent. Both are 3-3.

No. 10 maegashira Kyokushuzan (3-3), or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, gripped opponent No. 11 maegashira Minatofuji (2-4) from behind at the ringside and gave him a decisive push.

In the 26-member juryo, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 6-ranked Kuniazuma, or Brazilian Vander Ramos, was shoved out by No. 10-ranked Hamanishiki (1-5).

In makushita, the highest junior division, No. 7-ranked Hoshitango (1-2), or Argentine Imach Marcelo Salomon, was driven out by No. 8-ranked Minami. No. 19-ranked Kasugao (2-1) bulldozed out No. 18-ranked Kanechika.

In sandanme, the second-highest junior division, No. 94-ranked Ryuo, or Mongolian Erkhem Ochirsanchirbold, was slapped down by No. 90-ranked Yakigaya.

In jonidan, the third-highest junior division, No. 75-ranked Orora (1-2), or Russian Mikhakhanov Anatolivaleryevich, was pushed out by No. 78-ranked Tsurusuzuki. No. 96-ranked Ryukiyama, or South Korean Kim Soo-young, drove out No. 97-ranked Kawahara.

In sumo's lowest class of jonokuchi, No. 33-ranked Hoshizakura (1-2), or Mongolian Myagmar Altangerel, shoved out No. 28-ranked Fukukasuga. His fellow Mongolian Duvchin Lkhagvaa, wrestling as Hoshihikari (2-1), threw down No. 35-ranked Teramoto.

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the tournament.
