Kalaheo blanks Kailua
to stay in first place

The Kalaheo boys' soccer team muscled its way past Kailua yesterday, 1-0, to remain in first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division.

Kailua head coach Steve Adams anticipated a physical contest in this heated rivalry.

"They scored. We gave it to them," he said. "(Kailua) took advantage of the opportunity."

It was senior defender Anthony Ornellas' 30th-minute goal from 15 yards out off a cross from sophomore Nathan Amous that provided the margin of victory.

At first, Ornellas' shot didn't appear to be heading for the net. The Surfriders' goalkeeper had already set himself in position when the ball glanced off the shin of Kailua senior defender Derrick Yonamine and ended up in the goal.

"We take it as it comes," said Kalaheo coach Leo Titcomb. "We had a couple opportunities to put in a clean goal, but unfortunately it didn't happen. So, we'll take it."

Both teams had their chances to score in the first half. The Mustangs' goal followed a number of attacks that were turned away by Kailua.

One of the best chances for the Surfriders came a few minutes before the Kalaheo goal. Midfielder Ryan Yamamoto received a throw-in from defender Jason Morisato just in front of the Mustangs' net. But before Yamamoto could get off a shot, Kalaheo halfback Stephan Kane cleared the ball with a gutsy kick over his own goal.

Both teams came close to scoring in the second half. A final push got Kailua near the Kalaheo goal with less than a minute to play, but the Surfriders couldn't convert.

The week doesn't get any easier for the Mustangs. With two games remaining in the regular season, Kalaheo meets second-place Kalani tomorrow. The Falcons cruised past McKinley yesterday, 3-0.

Kalaheo is 6-1-1 with 19 points. Kailua slips into a tie for third place with 14 points and a record of 4-2-2. Three of the four teams still in the playoff hunt (Kahuku, Castle, Kaiser and Roosevelt) will play tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. Castle will face Kahuku and Moanalua plays at Kaiser.
