Officials from Disney-Touchstone Pictures are in the islands this week to plan the world premiere of the $130 million film "Pearl Harbor," which is expected to be shown May 21 on Ford Island.

Rear Adm. John Costas, acting Pacific Fleet deputy commander, told Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and lawmakers yesterday that the Navy would like to invite former President George Bush to the premiere.

Bush was a naval aviator who was shot down by the Japanese in World War II and was rescued by a submarine.

A Disney official in Los Angeles said a spokeswoman was on her way to Hawaii when the Star-Bulletin called the studio yesterday for details. Disney also was sending its marketing experts to the islands to help with promotion.

Capt. Kevin Wensing, Pacific Fleet spokesman, said he could not confirm any details, except to say that discussions are under way. Costas said a major media junket was being planned with reviewers coming in to preview the movie. He said there could be several hundred national and international media representatives.

The movie is expected to go into general distribution a week later, on Memorial Day.

Expected to attend the island premiere of the film that deals with the U.S. entry into the Pacific are some of the principal actors in the movie. They may include Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kate Beckinsale.

The multimillion-dollar film by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay was shot at Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks and other Oahu military installations, with assistance from the Pentagon.

Department of Defense approval would be needed if the premiere is held on Ford Island.
