Kane Fernandez
memorial slated
for Sunday

A "celebration of life" for Kane S. Fernandez, who was known for presenting benefit carnivals in Hawaii, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The 64-year-old president and chief executive officer of E.K. Fernandez Shows and Fernandez Entertainment died Tuesday following a heart attack.

Widely praised for his generous spirit, commitment to education and youth and his great showmanship, he followed in the footsteps of his late father, E.K. Fernandez, who brought many extravaganzas to Hawaii and laid the foundations for the family entertainment empire.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu.


Calvin T. Akamine, 50, of Kaneohe, a customer engineer with NCR, died Jan. 5. He was born in Honolulu. Estefania S. "Pani" Apuya, 91, of Kapolei died Dec. 24 in St. Francis-West Medical Center. She was born in the Philippines. John W. Boyne, 82, of Kaneohe, a retired sales manager, died Jan. 3. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a disabled World War II veteran. Roy L. Cachola, 59, of Virginia and formerly of Hawaii, a retired flight attendant with United Airlines, died Jan. 1 in Arlington Hospital. He was born in Kohala, Hawaii. He is survived by brother Fred Jr., and sisters Henrietta Kaleikau, Gladys Cachola-Gross, Faith Rocha and Marie Kawai. Memorial services: 1 p.m. Sunday at Bernice Pauahi Chapel, Kamehameha Schools. Kenneth T.K. Ching, 77, of Honolulu, a retired real estate broker, died Jan. 7 in Honolulu. He was also a self-employed real estate broker and insurance agent. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Patsy Ann "Billie"; sons Curtis and Stuart; daughter Crystal; brothers Harold and Norman; sisters Charlotte Lum and Gaelic Ma, and a grandchild. Haruko "Doris" Fujimoto, 86, of Wahiawa died Dec. 27. She was born in Wahiawa. She is survived by husband Hideo; daughters Linda Kihara and Barbara Fujimoto; brother Sueki Kurihara; sister Yoshiko "Betty" Maeda, and two grandchildren. Private services.

James J. Inafuku, 79, of Honolulu, a retired U.S. Army Kapalama base supply supervisor, died Dec. 28. He was born in Haiku, Maui. He is survived by wife Carol; son Jon; daughter Anne; brothers George and Toshio; sisters Alice Makishi and Yoshiko Kamiya, and a grandchild. Private services.

January K. Holi Kahana, also known as "Jan" or "Ky," 66, of Hauula, a volleyball coach with Ekahi Volleyball Club, died Jan. 4. She was born in Honolulu. She is survived by daughters Evans and Rowena; son Keahi; brother Henry J.K. Holi, and two great-grandchildren. Services: 7 p.m. tomorrow at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. Henry T. Kimura, 84, of Honolulu, a retired vocational training coordinator for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, died Dec. 28 at home. He was a World War II veteran. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Leatrice; son Rodney; daughter Kathleen Richardson; brother Katsuyoshi, and two grandchildren. Private services.

Melvin K.F. Lau, 65, of Waipahu died Jan. 5 at home. He was born in Kahuku. He is survived by wife June S.; sons Curtis and Eric; daughter Melvia Akita; parents Francis and Nina Lau; brothers Vernon, Gerald and Leslie, and five grandchildren. Private services.

Kenneth C.H. Leong, 70, of Honolulu, a retired executive for Hawaiian Telephone Co., died Tuesday at home. He was born in Kamuela, Hawaii. He is survived by wife Harriet "Kana"; sons James "Kimo" and Jason; daughter Jill Hakuole; brother Clayton; sister Yolanda Holt, and eight grandchildren. Shoichi "Andy" Tengan, 81, of Honolulu, a retired machinist for Pearl Harbor Shipyard, died Monday in Beverly Manor. He was born in Honokaa, Hawaii. He is survived by wife Doris; daughters Linda Tengan and Pamela Nakata; brothers Masanobu, Seiki, Noboru and Mamoru; sister Kay Ford, and two grandchildren. Tomiko A. Uesaka, 82, of Honolulu, founder and chairman of the board of Asaki International Ltd., died Jan. 2. She was born in Kobe, Japan. The Rev. Alfred A. Vann, 84, of Honolulu, past provincial of The Sacred Hearts Fathers and Brothers, died Sunday at home. He was born in Belgium. There are no known survivors.
