Channel 9 adds shows

THE outlook at Channel 9 includes more than the weather these days. First they took primary weather Mug shotreporter Kim Gennaula and made her a co-anchor on the news, opening the door to Kuualoha Taylor. With her beauty queen looks, Taylor could describe the grimmest of fronts and a frightening Doppler, whatever that is, and we'd still watch. Gennaula has now branched out even further and will be hosting a new show called "Eye on People," which premieres on KGMB on Super Bowl Sunday. No, not opposite the Super Bowl, which would be euthanasia, but following it at 7 p.m. The four people she interviews on her premiere show will be First Lady Vicky Cayetano, the man buying the Star-Bulletin, David Black, Kahuku High football coach Suaki Livai and world surfing champ Sunny Garcia. Not to be completely overshadowed by Gennaula's appearances in non-weather related areas, Taylor is now hosting a show featuring chefs of Hawaii giving cooking demonstrations ... Taylor is venturing outside the station too. She'll be emceeing the Chinese Chamber of Commerce's 2001 Narcissus Fashion Show welcoming the Year of the Snake, Feb. 11 at the Hilton's Coral Ballroom ...

Cavemen on Maui

LEAVE it to Chuck Thorne to find an inexpensive way to get lots of positive publicity for his Maui Cave Adventures. The Hana man bought 100 Craftsmen Ultra-Beam Battery Lanterns for use in tours of Ka'Eleku Caverns. He told the Sears people that he conducts tours of the caverns with the durable flashlights, which can cast a beam 1,000 feet. The result? Home improvement expert Bob Vila, who's a spokesman for Craftsmen products, was dispatched to Maui, a move he didn't fight, to shoot a commercial on the lanterns for national TV. They were filming Vila in the caves earlier this week ...

SITTING around in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton, Kapalua, following the monthly Moonlight Mo'olelo last week, some of the entertainers interrupted the beautiful melodies they regaled hotel guests with to sing parodies. The biggest laugh went to Owana Salazar's original, "I Wanna Go Back to My Little Grass Stash in Kealakekua, Hawaii." ... Next month's Mo'olelo on Feb. 9, organized by the hotel's Hawaiian cultural advisor, Clifford Nae'ole, will consist of kupuna "talk story" and filmmaker Edgy Lee showing her award-winning "Paniolo," followed by a "talk story" session with the paniolo featured in the film ...

THOSE who remember the Third Floor, once the finest dining spot in Honolulu, surely remember the piano stylings of Tim Kallen. He was booked to entertain on a cruise two years ago, but was beaten up by a huge guy downtown who rearranged his face, causing 47 stitches to his lips and knocking out all his teeth. Now, $57,000 later, he's attempting a comeback complete with a new smile, thanks to his dentist. Kallen's new CD is called "Hand Made Piano." ...

Another Odyssey

IT was too good to pass up, having a New Year's party with the theme, "2001, A Space Odyssey," or variation thereof. Manoa Valley Theater figured it could turn the oft-used theme to its advantage, and it's hoping all hotels, clubs, discos or other establishments who used the Stanley Kubrick theme might have some props left over. The theater would like to borrow them for its own "MVT Odyssey" Feb. 17 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. Anyone who can help should call Karen Brilliande at 988-6131 ...
