Kalaheo puts on a show
against McKinley

With a roster full of athletically-gifted players, and coach Pete Smith's ability to get the most out of them, the Kalaheo Mustangs are as entertaining as they are good.

It's doubtful, though, that McKinley fans viewed Kalaheo's 71-44 win over the host Tigers yesterday as entertainment.

Skyler Wilson ran Kalaheo's offense with style, finding -- and creating -- holes in the defense.

DC Daniels, a perfect complement to Wilson, used his quickness to blow past defenders and his jumping ability to soar over them.

And the 6-foot-6 Ikaika Francis not only controlled the middle -- swatting shots away and ripping down rebounds -- he also played every minute hard, diving for a loose ball with five minutes to go and Kalaheo up by 30 points.

"It's a great group of kids," Smith said. "We can do a lot of different things, and figuring out what we can do with them is fun."

One way that Smith has found to put all of his great athletes to use is by employing a pressure defense.

The Mustangs (3-0) used a ferocious man-to-man press defense to jump all over the Tigers (2-1) early, and McKinley was never able to get back into the game.

"They kind of overwhelmed us," McKinley coach Jason Tittle said. "We had prepared for (the press) but they were still able to do it."

Smith said he's been stressing to his players that they can always turn to their defense.

"On the offense you can have good nights and bad nights, but you can play good defense every night," Smith said. "They're doing a great job with it so far."

Kalaheo led 26-10 at the end of the first quarter and scored seven of the first nine points in the second to take a 33-12 lead.

McKinley scored the final four points of the half, on a Voltaire Gansit jumper and a layup by Justin Ka'apa.

"The second quarter we tried to use a lot of guys and we kind of lost our intensity level," said Smith. "One of the things we've been talking to these guys about is if we want to play at the next level, and get ready for the playoffs, we have to bring our intensity up."

The Mustangs got the message, opening the second half with a 10-2 run.

"We only scored seven points in the second quarter so we were a little concerned about that," Wilson said. "(Coach) told us to pick it up."

Wilson scored the first eight points, including a strong putback on a Daniels miss. He had a chance to complete a three-point play, but missed the foul shot.

Francis swooped in and completed the play with a layup, giving Kalaheo a 43-18 lead.

In those opening minutes of the half, Francis had a block, a steal, two rebounds and two points. He finished just short of a triple-double, with 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks.

"Now we know where we have to be," Tittle said. "If we face them again later in the season, we have to be better. Much better."
