Metal plaques measure the distance between levee
inspection points at Kawainui Marsh.
The plaques appear regularly on the wall, which is atop the levee, which is a'thwart all that boggy plain north of Kailua. The levee was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers some years ago to keep a handle on flooding problems.
Engineers Public Affairs Specialist Michelle Cain had the answer within minutes. "They're levee station inspection points," she said. "When the engineers do an annual inspection of the levee, these markers help them note exactly where they are. A marker like 2+00 is engineer-speak for 200 feet from the beginning point."
So, the signs are like the mileage markers beside the highway. They tell you not only where you are, but how far you've come, how far you have left to go, and where you were all along.
