Properly cultivated, narcissus will bloom
in time for the lunar new year.

Narcissus greets
new year

Architect Gilman Hu, known as Mr. Narcissus to his many students, starts a new series of narcissus workshops tomorrow at the Academy Art Center at Linekona.

Two sessions will be offered for five consecutive Saturdays in recognition of the lunar new year Jan. 24. Students will learn the art of upright and crab-claw narcissus culture for a fragrant display during the holiday. Narcissus cultivation takes about 14 to 17 days.

Although places are still available, there are more openings for the afternoon, 1 to 3:30 p.m. session, than morning sessions running 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Fees for the workshop are $35 for new students and $25 for returning students. Call 532-8742 to register.

The workshops are offered in conjunction with the annual Narcissus Exhibition in the Honolulu Academy of Arts courtyards, taking place Feb. 10 and 11. The exhibition will also feature demonstrations and displays by the Hawaii Bonsai Association.
