The nene litho.

Put a stamp on it

Stamps are deceptive little things. Tiny, and they're just paper, after all. But the right stamp can be worth way more than its weight in gold. Take a nene goose stamp from 1964 -- it cost $3 at the time; now worth $2,500.

It seems a field worth learning about.

Hawaiian Islands Stamp and Coin is holding a free exhibit of valuable collectibles, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Outrigger Waikiki upper lobby.

Included will be an 1894 2-cent stamp showing Honolulu Harbor and letters written by King David Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Kalakaua was an avid collector of Hawaiian artifacts.

The nene goose stamp will be displayed along with the original lithograph by artist Stanley Stearns. More than 1.6 million of the stamps were sold.

Free verbal appraisals of Hawaiian stamps, coins and letters will be offered. Call 531-6251.

New year now or never

Now that some of the holiday pressures are off, we can finally contemplate the new year.

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii is helping out by hosting a free New Year Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 13.

There will be mochi-pounding demonstrations, a tea ceremony, displays of ikebana, plus demonstrations of martial arts such as kendo, aikido and judo, performances by koto and taiko musicians, dancers and a harmonica ensemble.

Of course there will also be the all-important food booths offering sushi, andagi and other specialties for a nominal fee.

The event takes place on center grounds, at 2454 S. Beretania St., across from Star Market in Moiliili. For information, call 945-7633.

Retail Merchants seek logo

The Retail Merchants of Hawai'i need a new logo and is inviting all would-be artists to submit their designs.

The logo will be used in branding RMH on all the organization's materials, including letterhead package, newsletter, signage, Web site and all printed and visual matter associated with the group.

The logo must be designed for two-color application and black-and-white application. There is no entry fee, and the winning designer will receive a $500 cash award. Only hard copies may be submitted, no digital files.

Mail entries to: Retail Merchants of Hawai'i, 1240 Ala Moana Boulevard, Suite 215, Honolulu, HI 96814. Entries must be postmarked by Feb. 5.

RMH, a trade organization commited to the growth and development of the retail industry in Hawaii, marks its centennial anniversary this year.

Tribute to a King planned

The Martin Luther King Coalition will celebrate its 13th annual parade and rally Jan. 15 in memory of King in Waikiki.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. at Magic Island, Ala Moana Park.

The rally begins at 11 a.m. at Kapiolani Park Bandstand. Faye Kennedy will speak about King's legacy.

The celebration will continue with food vendors and performances by Night Train, Willie Hill, Trinity Baptist Church Choir, Drums Hawaii, JP Smoke Train, Azure McCall and many more.
