Star-Bulletin staff

Maui County's Division of Motor Vehicles & Licensing is launching three new programs to make it more efficient and user-friendly.

It is adjusting its branch hours starting Jan. 2 and will phase in the new programs within the next few months. These include:

Bullet A greeter to assist customers in line, making sure they have necessary paperwork for transactions and to answer questions.

Bullet Mail-in processing to provide faster turnaround times for car registration renewals and to process renewals received via new drop boxes at various sites.

Bullet A call center, where employees will answer phone calls directly and handle specific transactions over the phone. Currently, calls are routed through an automated attendant system before being routed to staff.

To make these changes, the division is adjusting hours at Kihei, Lahaina and Makawao as follows:

Motor Vehicle Registration

Satellite Motor Vehicle Registration Offices - regular hours, but only on the following days:

Bullet Kihei: Thursday-Friday

Bullet Lahaina: Monday-Tuesday

Bullet Makawao: Monday-Friday

Bullet Wailuku Motor Vehicle Registration Office: Regular hours except Wednesdays, 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Driver Licensing

Satellite Driver Licensing Offices open regular hours, with the following changes:

Bullet Kihei: Closed Wednesdays

Bullet Lahaina: Closed Fridays

Bullet Makawao: Closed Tuesdays

Driver License Road Tests

Bullet Kihei: Tuesdays only

Bullet Lahaina: Wednesdays only

Bullet Makawao: Thursdays only

Changes will begin Jan. 2 and continue through June.
