Question: What ever happened to the state's Ala Wai Canal dredging project? Ala Wai dredging
project awaits result
of bid protestAnswer: Originally scheduled to begin as early as last month, the project is on hold while the state hears a bid protest, according to Dean Uchida, land administrator for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
After the $10.35 million project went out to bid, a contractor accused the Land Department of being nonresponsive, Uchida said.
The administrative hearing on the protest is scheduled to come up sometime in January, he said. From then it will take a few months for the project to get under way.
The plan includes dredging about 173,000 cubic yards of silt and sediment, which will be disposed of at sites approved of by the Environmental Protection Agency. Once dredged, the canal will be returned to a depth of about 10 feet.
The canal was partially dredged 22 years ago. This will be the first full dredging since the canal was constructed.
