Turkey makes for a lower-fat holiday meal.

Diabetes a challenge

The more than 16 million Americans who have diabetes need to think more prudently than most people about how to manage eating and exercise at the holidays and after.

That's the advice of the American Diabetes Association and Dr. David Berenbeim of PacifiCare Health Systems, who is a practicing physician and a person living with diabetes. They offer the following recommendations for approaching that last big holiday binge, this week's New Year's parties:

Bullet Plan ahead. Think about how carbohydrates and calories fit into your meal plan. If you are to be a guest, offer to bring a dish to help your choices.

Bullet Eat something before a big holiday meal, to take the edge off your appetite.

Bullet Watch your alcohol intake.

Bullet Practice portion control.

Bullet Use substitutes such as skim milk or nonfat yogurt in foods like mashed potatoes.

Bullet Meat savvy: Turkey contains fewer calories than ham; white meat is lower in fat; removing skin from poultry reduces fat.

Bullet Don't forget to exercise. Spend time walking the dog or playing with the kids to help lower blood glucose levels.
