Turkey makes for a lower-fat holiday meal.
That's the advice of the American Diabetes Association and Dr. David Berenbeim of PacifiCare Health Systems, who is a practicing physician and a person living with diabetes. They offer the following recommendations for approaching that last big holiday binge, this week's New Year's parties:
Plan ahead. Think about how carbohydrates and calories fit into your meal plan. If you are to be a guest, offer to bring a dish to help your choices. On the Net: www.diabetes.org.Eat something before a big holiday meal, to take the edge off your appetite.
Watch your alcohol intake.
Practice portion control.
Use substitutes such as skim milk or nonfat yogurt in foods like mashed potatoes.
Meat savvy: Turkey contains fewer calories than ham; white meat is lower in fat; removing skin from poultry reduces fat.
Don't forget to exercise. Spend time walking the dog or playing with the kids to help lower blood glucose levels.
The offer includes use of all weight-training and cardiovascular equipment, free weights and access to all classes including kick boxing, step and yoga.
