The first homes are expected to be built by June, with pre-sales beginning in January, Honolulu-based Schuler said yesterday. Prices are expected to start in the upper $300,000 range with sizes going from 1,650 to 2,200 square feet. The lots average about 11,000 square feet.
Some of the homes will border the 10-hole Puakea Golf Course developed by Grove Farm, which was recently purchased itself by America Online Inc. Chairman Steve Case.
Grove Farm originally developed Puako as an 89-lot subdivision and began marketing the lots for sale by themselves in 1995.
Schuler bought the remaining 20 lots that Grove Farm didn't sell.
Schuler recently bought land for new homes in Makakilo, Hawaii Kai, Kalama Valley and Wailuku, Maui. The company also develops residences in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.
Earlier this year, Schuler said it plans to merge with the sixth-largest home builder in California, Western Pacific Housing, early next year, pending an anticipated approval by shareholders.
