WAILUKU -- A contest is being held that will feature the best photograph taken of one of 383 National Park Service sites in the United States, including Haleakala National Park. Photo contest

"While we certainly hope that a picture of Haleakala will be selected, we also want to invite all of our visitors and neighbors to submit their pictures of other national parks they enjoy," Haleakala superintendent Donald Reeser said.
The winner of the contest will have the photograph used as the image in the 2002 National Park Pass and receive a trip for four to any U.S. National Park, a Kodak camera, and a personalized pass.
The deadline for receiving entries is March 15, 2001.
The contest is being sponsored by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation, with Eastman Kodak as a partner.
Qualified photographs are to have been taken since Jan. 1, 2000.
Entry forms may be requested by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to National Park Pass, Contest Entry Form, P.O. Box 5220, Young America, MN 55558-5220.
A National Park Pass sells for $50 and admits the owner and spouse, parents and children to any national park that charges a per-person entrance fee.
The 2001 image is of historic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Acadia National Park.
All it takes for a high school junior or senior to earn $7,500 is a winning entry in the Knight essay contest, conducted by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, on the subject, "The U.S. Constitution: Does it stand the test of time?" High school essay

The winning national level research paper of 500 to 750 words, excluding title page, footnotes and bibliography, will be published in the organization's national magazine. The winner also gets a trip to Louisville, Ky. to receive the cash award.
The Hawaii Society of SAR awards local prizes of U.S. Savings Bonds in the state competition -- $300 for first place, $150 for second and $50 for third.
The first-place Hawaii entry is submitted to the national competition.
Last year's Hawaii winner was Carrie Steisslinger of Leilehua High School.
Entries must be double spaced using a computer, typewriter or word processor. Papers will be judged on historical accuracy, clarity of thought, organization, logic, grammar, spelling and documentation.
