Winners of the sixth annual Historic Hawaii Foundation's "Color a Historic Building" contest are: Ashtyn Joseph, Charles Young, Neewan Navarrete, Manny Cagdan, Kaitlin Nugent, Aura Coffman, Eunkyoung Lee, Kira Yamada, Zachary Ramos, Christopher Doughty, Angela Park, Christina Andrade, Matthew Cabral and Ann Marie Osurman. Judy Sobin, executive director of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, was named Pro Bono Manager of the Year by the American Bar Association.
Veronica Kaneko, field service manager for the Hawaii Region, received McDonald's President's Award.
Winners of the Second Congressional District Art Competition were: Alexis Dixon, first, and Tod Gushiken, second. Both students attend Baldwin High School and are students of Janet Sato. They competed against 41 finalists representing each country. Dixon's piece was titled "In the Sand" and will be displayed for one year in the Cannon House Office Building walkway to the U.S. Capitol. Gushiken's piece was titled "Gift of Life" and will be displayed in Congresswoman Patsy Mink's Hawaii district office in the Prince Kuhio Federal Building.David Loveless, an eighth-grade English teacher at Moanalua Middle School, received the Geico Educators for Excellence Award and the Herman M. Aizawa Literacy award. His wife, Sylvia, received the Castle Honors in Leadership Development award from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation.
The President George Washington Middle School received the Presidential Award, the highest honor for excellence in service-learning. Accepting the award on behalf of the school were Marsha Alegre, principal; Alicia Fermin, middle school coordinator; and Roxanne Kaino, student activities coordinator.
Scholarships
Hawaiian Cement's 2000 Scholarship Awards Program winners: Maile Coad, daughter of Michael Coad and graduate of St. Andrew's Priory, received an $8,000 scholarship; Chelsee Rodrigues, daughter of Michael Rodrigues and graduate of Kaahumanu Hou Christian School, received an $8,000 scholarship; and Shawna Aveiro, daughter of Clarence Aveiro and student at Chaminade University, received a $4,000 scholarship. Junior Achievement of Hawaii awarded more than $4,000 in college scholarships to these four students for their scholastic achievement, community service and outstanding participation in its programs. They are: Keith Bondaug of Hilo High School; Kent Fujimoto of Waiakea High School; and Cynthia Au and Lily Lam of Roosevelt High School.
