to Hawaii Hall

The 12 athletes to be
inducted also include
five Olympians

Five Olympians, three World Series champions, one Super Bowl champion and a champion of sumo.

They are among the 12 who will be inducted into the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame in February.

The Class of 2001 includes:

Olympic silver medalists Chris Duplanty (water polo 1988), cousins Maiola and Manuela Kalili (swimming 1932), and Harold Sakata (weightlifting 1948).

Also selected was Duncan Macdonald, who competed in the 1976 Olympics but did not medal. He was the winner of the first Honolulu Marathon in 1972.

The World Series winners are Mike Lum (Reds, 1976), Lenn Sakata (Orioles, 1982) and Sid Fernandez (Mets, 1986).

Russ Francis, who played for the Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers, will also be inducted.

Also chosen were: sumo champion Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe); Peter Fithian, founder of the Hawaii International Billfish Tournament, and champion race car driver Danny Ongais.

The induction banquet will be Feb. 6 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
