How it all began

Bullet The Iolani Classic started 18 years ago after Glenn Young took his Iolani team to a 1982 tourney in Las Vegas.

"We got blown off the court and I (realized) we were really behind in basketball in Hawaii," Young said. "In order to improve the level of play here, we needed to bring in top-caliber play."

The Raiders won the state championship in 1983 and Young organized the first Classic for that December.

Two years ago this week

Bullet Rice (N.Y.) beat Timpview (Utah) in the championship game of the Iolani Classic, with Kenneth Satterfield scoring 26 points. Satterfield now plays for Cincinnati.

Kalaheo finished fifth in the tournament, guided by 6-foot-8 center Julian Sensley and Ryan Hogue. Punahou nearly upset Rice on the second day of play, with all-state forward Brandon Brooks scoring 28 points.

The tournament also featured Chris Walton -- the son of NBA All-Star Bill Walton -- playing for University San Diego High, Timmy Chang for St. Louis and Jerome Williams for Waipahu.

Twelve years ago this week

Bullet Chris McNeal missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Flint Hill Prep (Va.) held on to beat Oak Hill (Va.), 66-64 in the Iolani Classic final. McNeal would go on to star at the University of Pittsburgh.

Flint Hill, which won its fourth title in four years, featured future NBA players Randolph Childress and George Lynch.

Iolani's Kanoe Winchester had the top shooting performance of the tournament, hitting nine consecutive 3-pointers against Dunbar (Md.) earlier in the week. The Poets, led by Sam Cassell, won anyway.
