A 63-year-old man drove into the Ala Wai Canal this morning, the Honolulu Fire Department reported. The man was unconscious when the fire-rescue crew removed him from his car.

"When they extricated him from the automobile, he had pulse," said fire Capt. Gerald Komine. "But he might have gone into cardiac."

He was taken to Straub Hospital in critical condition.

The man was traveling mauka on Paoakalani Avenue in Waikiki and crossed Ala Wai Boulevard, hopped the curb, went through some plants, crossed the sidewalk and plunged into the canal.

The car rested on a ledge, indicating it was not traveling at high speed, Komine said.

The front end of the car was submerged. A tow truck driving by had already stopped and assisted fire personnel in stabilizing the car, Komine said.
