The party begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, featuring the lighting of family menorahs, a buffet supper, singing and story-telling by Noa Baum, a recipient of the City of Davis (Calif.) Arts Contract Grant.
Hanukkah celebrates the religious freedom won by the Maccabees, an army led by Judah Maccabee, over the Greek Syrians. The traditional lighting of the menorah commemorates the reclamation of the temple from the Syrians, and signifies the miraculous oil jug that lasted eight days to light the temple's menorah.

The Baltimore Consort will be here Jan. 11 for one performance 7:30 p.m. at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Orvis Auditorium. Consort at Orvis
The virtuoso ensemble specializes in the popular music of the 16th to 18th centuries, played on lute, viol, cittern, flute, early guitar, recorder, crumhorn and other instruments.
Tickets for the concert are $24 general and $19 for students, available at the UH Campus Center ticket office.
The concert is being sponsored by the UHM Outreach College and Music Department in association with Outrigger Hotels and Resorts.

The Bishop Museum has started "A Behind the Scenes Tour," opening its restricted areas focusing on King Kalakaua, the royal family, their clothing, jewels and personal belongings. Behind scenes at Bishop
The tours will be presented 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Tickets are $15 in addition to the general admission. Call 847-8243.
In addition, the museum will be starting its 12-session training class for docents and volunteer cultural guides next month. Sessions taught by kumu John Keola Lake will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays from Jan. 20 to April 7.
